About PLTI of Solano

The Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) is a free 20-week program established by the National Parent Leadership Institute. It equips parents, caregivers, and other adults with the skills and knowledge to become effective advocates for children and positive change-makers in their communities.

PLTI was intentionally designed to provide a unique approach to civic engagement that improves outcomes for children and families. Guided by the mantra “Nothing About Us, Without Us,” PLTI focuses on developing leadership, advocacy, and community action—not parenting skills. Adults of all backgrounds, even those without children, are welcome to participate and help shape meaningful change in their communities.

Mission

PLTI builds the civic capacity of family members and organizations to improve child and community outcomes.

Vision

A healthy democracy, resulting from family and community having the skills, knowledge, and opportunity to share power in the school, the neighborhood, and at all public-policy decision-making tables.

Who Should Apply

We invite applications from adults who want to be proactive agents of change for children and their communities. While the program is designed to support parents and caregivers—including prospective parents, family members, foster parents, co-parents, and older siblings—it is also open to adults who do not have children but are passionate about making a positive impact. This includes educators, youth workers, childcare providers, babysitters, and anyone interested in advocating for children and strengthening their community.

Participant Reflections

I really enjoyed the steps. When the expectation is straightforward I tend to do better. I like that everyone is respectful to each other. I learned the outline...the path I need to start my project.

"[What I liked most about the session was] how respectful and supportive everyone was. The participants. Everyone spoke up and participated and I felt the passion and engagement. I liked the listening and speaking session."

PLTI helped me to improve speaking in public, to trust myself and to open my eyes that I can make a difference in my community. I can make a difference at least in one person's life.
