PLTI Alumni

Alumni Impact

Graduates of the Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) are actively working to improve their communities. A 2020 survey revealed:

  • 86% of alumni were engaged in at least one advocacy issue, with Education and Schools being the most common focus, followed by Racial Equity. 23% collaborated with fellow graduates on these efforts.

  • 71% of alumni helped recruit new parents into PLTI, expanding the program’s impact.

  • On average, alumni participated in nine out of thirteen common civic actions over the past year, including contacting elected officials, volunteering, and serving on committees.

The survey also found little variation in civic participation based on race, education, immigration status, or gender. Notably, in cases where differences did appear, white parents were not the most civically active—suggesting that the "civic empowerment gap" seen in the broader U.S. population was largely absent among PLTI alumni.

86% of alumni, after graduating from the PLTI program, continued to engage in at least one advocacy issue at the time of the survey.

Fatimah Hanif

I am a 2023 graduate of PLTI my experience was amazing. Just learning so much that I apply in my daily life. I am still doing my community project. I started Healing in Sound: A Free Community Sound Bath that I do monthly in Vallejo. It is to help heal the trauma that our community goes through. I appreciate PLTI for helping get out of my shell & take a chance on myself. I am now a published author as well. Doing many other sound healing events & I am speaking in front of crowds. It feels truly amazing. I appreciate all the PLTI staff just for being them & super encouraging. I am happy they were apart of my journey.

Bethany Smith

The Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) gave me the tools to advocate for my childen and create positive, lasting change in my community. I gained knowledge on engaging with policymakers and collaborating with others from diverse backgrounds to address important issues. The support from instructors and fellow parents empowered me to confidently step into leadership roles, including becoming a board member with the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District.

PLTI Alumni Recognized by the California State Assembly

PLTI alumni from Merced, San Joaquin, and Solano Counties visited the State Capitol to advocate for policies that support and uplift families. Their dedication to driving positive change was honored when they were recognized by the State Assembly for their impactful efforts. This moment of recognition reflects their continued commitment to advocating for their communities long after completing the PLTI program.
