The celebration will take place at noon Wednesday, October 5, at the Joseph A. Nelson Community Center in Suisun. The public is invited. “This is a celebration for everyone who’s working on behalf of children in this county,” said Kim Thomas, Executive Director of the Children’s Network. “This award shows what can happen when people pull together.” Thomas will be a featured speaker at the event. She will talk about the history and accomplishments of the Children’s Alliance, and the future of children’s issues in the county. In addition, she will talk about how Solano County came to be one of only a handful of California communities to win the prestigious honor awarded by America’s Promise, The Alliance for Youth, a bipartisan national organization founded by General Colin Powell to help America’s young people. Citing why its judges chose Solano County from more than 1,200 communities across the nation vying for the award, America’s Promise praised the Children’s Network for its work with children in the county, advising the Solano County Board of Supervisors on children’s issues and producing the Solano Children’s Report Card and the Solano Children’s Budget. Thomas gives credit for the award to the many people and organizations working together on behalf of children in Solano County, as well as the California Endowment for its funding of the Children’s Network Report Card and Budget. Also earning high praise from America’s Promise were the Solano County Board of Supervisors, the Solano Coalition for Better Health, and the Solano County Department of Health and Human Services, whose representatives will be on hand for Wednesday’s celebration. Lunch will be served. The festivities will be held in Conference Room A at the Nelson Community Center, located at 611 Village Drive in Suisun.
